What are Antifungal medicines?
Antifungal medicines are typically pharmaceutical drugs that have two broad categories of fungicide and fungistatic. While fungicides are biocidal chemical compounds or biological organisms used to kill parasitic fungi or their spores; fungistatics are anti-fungal agents that hinder the growth of fungus, without really destroying the fungus.
How do Antifungal medicines work?
Primarily there are two ways in which the antifungal medicines work; i,e either by directly killing fungal cells or by preventing the fungal cells from growing or thriving any further. They basically target structures or functions that are necessary for fungal cells but not the human cells, and hence they fight a fungal infection without damaging the human body cells.
The two specific structures that are commonly targeted by these medicines are the fungal cell membrane and the fungal cell wall; which happen to surround and protect the fungal cell. In case either one of these is damaged, the fungal cell can just open up and die.
