What are Anti-Asthmatic Drugs or Asthma Medications?
Anti-inflammatory drugs are the most effective and commonly used long-term control medications for asthma. They reduce swelling and tightening in the airways.
Medications for asthma include both solid dosage forms as well as inhalers, the latter being the more predominant in the current treatments. There are different types of medications for asthma, as per the immediate purpose.
- Controller medications are the most important because they prevent asthma attacks. These drugs keep the airways less inflamed and less likely to react to triggers. Further, there are two types of controller drugs:
- Anticholinergics medicines like ipratropium (Atrovent) reduce the mucus in addition to opening the airways and might take a longer time to act in comparison to the short-acting beta-agonists.
- Oral corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone and prednisone usually lower swellings in the airways.
- Quick-relief medications are also referred to as rescue medications. They tend to relax the muscles around the airways. At times one is prescribed a rescue medication for more than twice a week when the asthma isn’t well-controlled. Again, there are people who have exercise-induced asthma and are prescribed a quick-acting medicine called a beta-agonist before a workout.
- Short-acting beta-agonists are the first choice for quick relief of asthma symptoms. They include albuterol (ProAir HFA, Proventil HFA, Ventolin HFA), epinephrine (Asthmanefrin, Primatene Mist), and levalbuterol (Xopenex HFA).
- Combination quick-relief medicines have both an anticholinergic and a short-acting beta-agonist.
